why doesn't the government put russian in the high schools here in US

why doesn't the government put russian in the high schools here in US?
I live in San Jose, California and i really want to learn Russian, here the languages are mainly french and Spanish, and the rarest language that you could find in some high school is japanese and german but no russian...If you look at it russian is more used in the world than german or French, French is only used in some parts of Vietnam and northern Africa and german is only used in Germany, and russian is used in the former republics of the soviet union, eastern europe, mongolia, and China

Mongolia has its own language. So does many of the ex-USSR countries. Chinese people speak Mandarin or Cantonese, not Russian. There are 300 million native-French speakers around the world and its the language of diplomacy and arts. German is the second most spoken language on the web and very useful for scientists and international traders. Russian is also useful, but since Russia lost most of it's influence over the years and its population is dwindling, it's not your best bet. Plus there's the whole reminiscence of the Cold War. Arabic is in high demand. You can learn Russian independently. Surely some language school offer courses.

Yes Russian is more spoken than German and French, but the same argument could be used for why we don't learn Mandarin in the US (well some schools offer it, but mostly independent schools and they still don't really encourage it). The thing is, Chinese and Russian are much harder (especially for English native speakers) to learn because of many things such as learning a whole new alphabet, plus we are closer to several spanish speaking and french speaking countries than we are russian or chinese so why not learn the language that is easier and that you're more likely to use?

If you think that Russian is used more in the world than French, I highly doubt that your brain would be large enough to even begin to comprehend the nasty grammar system they have. French is the official language of more than thirty countries. It is spoken on every continent (yes, even Antarctica, on the three military and research bases that operate entirely in French) with 400 million total fluent speakers around the globe. Along with English, it is the ONLY other international language of business and diplomacy. Hence why nearly every passport in the world is printed in French. French is the official language of UNESCO, NATO, the UN, the OECD, the EU, IOC, ILB, the Red Cross, and the UIA. Not to mention that it is THE number one language preferred by the US state department. German is used in Switzerland, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Austria, and Belgium. Russian has been in a SEVERE decline in China and Mongolia, and many nationalist movements in Eastern European countries have led to the native languages of those nations coming back into widespread use - Ukraine is a prime example. In others, such as the Czech Republic and Poland, Russian is practically nonexistent. I'm not going to deny the importance of Russian, but puffing it up with a whole lot of bull makes you look like the идиот here =]
